Hello all who who care to read this! I'm going to write an essay about one of my favourite pairings, this time from The Legend of Zelda. Link and Midna from Twilight Princess.
It's pretty much one of the most canon pairings in the game, I think. I know LinkxIlia seems to be the favourited, and to a degree yes, but I think at the same time Link later on grows to feel toward Ilia as though she were a sister. That's just what I think. I know LinkxZelda is an option also, given that it's usually canon in every other game they're involved together in. Yes, I do agree, but in Twilight Princess, it's a bit less likely since they don't connect and interact as much, and Zelda seems more concerned about Hyrule than anything else. It COULD happen, like after the game ends, but that's about it.
Anyway, this essay will generally go through and explain the pairing of our favourite green-clad hero and our favourite little imp. Enjoy! ^^

1.Overview
The pairing of Link and Midna from Twilight Princess is one of the game's most popular and fun pairings of the game. The hero and his companion, and also a HeroxPrincess pairing. It's pretty popular given how their relationship grows and how Midna softens up some, becoming more of Link's friend than his Master, while Link grows to trust her and care for her, despite how she treated him at first.
It was rocky in the start, but then it blossomed into something lovely.
This essay will talk about feelings from both parties, reasons why it could and wouldn't work, and so on.
2. Midna's feelings
When we first meet Midna, we see her as an evil little imp out to use Link for her own reasons. Although she uses Link and doesn't care what happens to the Light Realm, she does have good intentions since she wants to save her people from Zant. She's not evil, just misunderstood.
At first, she thought of him as nothing more than a tool. A tool she needed in achieving the Fused Shadows that were sealed away within the Forest Temple, Goron Mines, and Lakebed Temple in Hyrule. She soon grew a bit fond of him when she saw that she could trust him enough to help, especially later on when they gain the first two Fused Shadows. She taunts him, belittles him, is sarcastic and mysterious, but at the same time, she did help him out of the dungeon in Hyrule Castle. It was a legend told by her people that they would be saved by a divine beast, and when she saw him transform into a wolf when he first entered the curtain of Twilight, she decided to use him.
Later on, after Link selflessly brought her to Princess Zelda in order to recover his true form, while Midna was close to dying due to being attacked by the Light Spirit Lanayru under Zant's control. She was so sure fully well that he would leave her to die, move on and forget about her. Instead he brought her to the castle, where Zelda sacrificed herself to save and heal Midna, resulting in her being impervious to the Light. That was when she was starting to see Link as more than just a tool, but as a friend, a companion. Although she wouldn't fully admit it, you can tell after that she did see him in a whole new way and really admired him and respected him. In her dying moments, she had been more worried about him than she was about herself. It also showed she was beginning to care for him when she refused to follow Zant and went to Link's side instead.
After that situation, she trusts him more and realized that she needs his help in defeating Zant, and requested that he go with her to the Twilight Realm once they found the Mirror of Twilight. She had even put her hand on his cheek, as bit of a term of endearment.
Midna since then treats Link a lot better, although still maintaing her sassy, sarcastic attitude all the same. She is dependent on him, as he is on her.
I can't say for sure, but it could be possible that Midna fell in love with him. She saw all the selfless ways he'd been toward her, toward others, and the selfless sacrifice Zelda had made, I think that's also something that triggered it.
After she and Link were battling against Ganondorf's beast form and he had arisen again, she had warped him and Zelda out of the castle so that she could take down Ganondorf on her own and protect them. That proved her companionship toward them and was willing to sacrifice herself.
At the end of the game, when Midna had said "Link...I..." and then finished with "See you later", it's possible she could've been trying to say "I love you", although no one can prove it. She may have cut herself off because as much as she wanted to tell him, it would only make her departure a lot harder than it had to be. Not only that, but it could also be that she was unsure of how Link felt toward her. You can tell she didn't like the idea of pretty much never seeing Link again, but she was the Twilight Princess and her people needed her, so she had no choice. She also wanted to prevent further chaos between their worlds, so that was also why she shattered the mirror.
In all, it's possible Midna fell in love with him, and didn't want to admit it for the reasons of her being the Twilight Princess, Link being from the Light World and her from the Twilight, and because of her uncertainty of Link's feelings.
Yes, I could be wrong, her true feelings are neither confirmed nor denied. But one thing is for sure, she grows to see Link as a friend and companion and attached to him as well. Unable to imagine her life without him.
3. Link's feelings
When Link first meets Midna, he's very reluctant to trust her and doesn't seem to like her very much. At the same time, since she helped him out of the cell in the dungeon of Hyrule Castle, he decided it was best to return the favour and then get rid of her, be done with it and go home.
Only, he learns a bit more than he bargained for. Leaving him no choice but to help Midna find the Fused Shadows, and save his friends, the Ordon children that were kidnapped by King Bulbin and his cronies. Although still reluctant to trust her, he becomes a servant to her and is willing to help her find the Fused Shadows if it meant he would also find and save his friends.
After finding two of the Fused Shadows, he becomes used to having her around and is growing to trust her a bit more, especially when he realizes that she's not out for anything bad, she just wants to stop Zant and save her people, even if she doesn't care about what happens to Hyrule. She needed his help because she couldn't do it alone. Although she treated him like a tool, belittled him and taunted him, he grows to like her a bit and would do anything to help her.
When Midna was attacked by the Light Spirit Lanayru under Zant's control, she was left in a dying state and as much as Link had every right to just leave her to die and not care at all, he couldn't do that. Although instructed to see Zelda about returning him to his true form, he was more worried about Midna. I could tell because if he really cared more about himself, he would've just left Midna to die and go to Hyrule Castle on his own. It was at that time that Link saw her as a friend, a companion, and was scared for her safety. Being selfless and helpful by nature, Link was willing to do what he could to help Midna rather than save himself.
After that whole ordeal, Link felt more toward Midna than before and was more than willing to help her find the Mirror of Twilight, and go with her to the Twilight Realm. When she had requested that, he accepted with no hesitation-and a smile.
Throughout the rest of the adventure, Link is obviously attached to Midna and can't imagine her not being around. He sees her as a friend, companion. It's possible he could've fallen in love with her, given his later actions. Although his feelings are also neither confirmed nor denied, it's possible. He too had stayed quiet of it because of the obstacles between them, and how she felt.
His feelings for her especially show after Ganondorf possessed Zelda and had thrown Midna out of the room. Link had tried rushing to her aid without even caring about Ganondorf. After they defeated his beast form and Link saw that she was going to fight him on her own, he's shocked by this and reaches out to help her with no hesitation, only to be warped away along with Zelda.
After Midna had warped him and Zelda out of the castle, and then he sees Ganondorf holding Midna's Fused Shadow helm headpiece she always wore, you can tell he's shocked and horrified that Midna was killed in the battle. I think he was angry at Ganondorf for that even more so, especially when he was about to step up but was stopped by Zelda.
When he battled Ganondorf one on one, he was not only fighting to save Hyrule and the Twilight Realm, but to avenge Midna. I don't know, I just think that was also a reason he was more determined.
After Ganondorf is defeated and Link sees that Midna is alive, he's really happy and overjoyed, running up the hill to greet her. When he sees that the curse on her was broken, he's obviously awed by her exotic, striking beauty. (I don't blame him, Midna's gorgeous!) The way he smiled really big just said how happy he was that she was alive.
When Midna shatters the Mirror of Twilight and Link realizes that, he's shocked and pretty despaired about it. Despite that we don't know of his true feelings for her, we all know that he's devastated because Midna was his friend and companion, they'd been together through the whole adventure and it wasn't pleasant parting with her. The loss of a friend is never fun or easy.
As I said before, it's POSSIBLE that Link is in love with her, but we can't quite prove it. One thing's for sure, he does like her a lot and saw her as a great friend and companion.
It was also sweet of how Link was holding Midna and cradling her after she had dissipated the barrier surrounding Hyrule Castle.
4. Reasons it would work
They started out as rough, begrudging acquaitances having to hel one another to get what they wanted. But then over time they saw each other as more than just that.
They journeyed the entire way together, stuck to each other's side through thick and thin and became really close, unable to live without each other. As Zelda said, Light and Shadow are two sides of the same coin, one cannot exist without the other. If Midna hadn't freed Link from his prison, he wouldn't have been able to rise to his true destiny, and Midna would've failed in destroying Zant.
They are Light and Shadow, and because soon Link became impervious to the Twilight thanks to the dark stone, becoming a bit of a Twili himself. Midna became a bit of a light dweller herself because she too became impervious to the light, thanks to Zelda, and still maintained that even after returning Zelda's spirit to her. They became a bit of each other's native.
Although their feelings can't be properly proved, but it would work in a lot of ways if they fell in love. But if they were in a relationship, they would definiely love and care for each other no matter what. They also balance each other out, given their personalities and native roots.
Link truly cares about Midna, and has selflessly helped her throughout the entire journey. Midna cares about him right back, and truly showed that after the incident in Lake Hylia. They both need each other and can't go on without the other. Without each other, Hyrule and the entire world would have plummeted into the Twilight, and the Twilight Realm would be doomed. Together, with their partnership and companionship, they saved both realms with complete selflesness in the end, triumphing over the evils that clouded both realms.
Link, the Hero Chosen by the Gods, and Midna, the Princess of Twilight, truly belong together, as light and shadow coming together, creating twilight.
5. Reasons why it wouldn't work
As stated before, there are reasons it wouldn't work between them in a romantic relationship.
We don't know their true feelings, and it could be possible that neither of them love each other romantically, or it could be one-sided.
Link is from the Light Realm, and Midna is from the Twilight Realm, both can't quite mix.
Midna is a Princess, Link is a simple farmhand. Ranks get in the way at times too.
Midna shattered the Mirror of Twilight, severing any ties with Link-albeit unwillingly-, so nothing further can go from there. (Unless of course the next Zelda game brings Midna back or sends Link back to the Twilight Realm. ;P)
No romance was shown between them throughout the game. (What else is new?)
6. Personal opinion
It was interesting how the pairing came about to me! When my brother first got Twilight Princess for Christmas in 2006, I knew nothing of the game and was completely overwhelmed. Even when I first played it, I was all "Oh my God, this is weird!!!" and all.
Well, later on I got the hang of the game and nowadays, I can play it with relative ease. ^^
Anyway, so I was pretty unaware of Link and Midna being paired together at the time. I then heard about it from somewhere and thought it was a bit odd. xD I started to read Legend of Zelda fanfictions some time back, and I read this one LinkxMidna fanfiction and I was interested!
After that, over time, I read more of the pairing and I fell in love with it! <3
I really think they're incredibly cute together and make a great couple. Like I said above in all this, it's what I believe. I was sad when Midna shattered the mirror and left, also shattering any LinkxMidna dreams. But like I said, I do believe they're in love, and I'll stick to that until it's proven.
Link and Midna together is just epically cute and sweet, and it's fun too. >w< Link is all quiet, gentle, kind, truthful and shy, and Midna's outgoing, sassy, sarcastic but with a kind and loving side. They're perfect for each other, seriously. And Midna's so loveable, you can't help but love her!
I'll continue to love and support LinkxMidna for all time! ^w^ Even if it's proven they don't love each other and don't end up together, I'll still love it because that's what I like. I will accept whatever it turns out to be, but I'll keep the love close to me.
7. Overall conclusion
In conclusion of this essay, there are reasons it would work, and reasons it wouldn't. Their true feelings are neither confirmed nor denied, so it can go either way.
Romantic or not, they still have a special bond and will always have a special place in each other's heart, no matter what.
Be it friendly or romantic, the two of them belong together.
Link and Midna. Together forever.
